Locating Thunder Source Using a Large-Aperture Micro-Barometer Array

Lightning generates sound waves across a wide range of frequencies, including infrasonic below 20 Hz. Source mechanism for these low frequency pulses is still area debate. Infrasound detected after rapid changes electrostatic field during the thunderstorm activity were analyzed. The measurements done by large aperture array absolute microbarometers located in Western part Czech Republic. Distances between four measuring sites are 4–10 km. infrasound source position was calculated from time delays change and signal arrival to individual assuming propagation spherical source. Only cases with sufficient signal-to-noise ratio on all variation speed height due temperature profile taken into account. For most analyzed cases, corresponds lightning location determined European detection network (EUCLID). often 3–5
